The days are short, the temperature drops and there isn’t much to do in the outdoors. Yes, we are talking about winters.
Before the cold frosts set in, there are a few things we must do. Many of us ignore the patios of our homes as they need to be thoroughly prepared to bear the harsh climatic conditions. This will enhance the lifespan of our outdoors surfaces, making them look enticing when the spring arrives.
Here are some tips to prepare the patios and decks for the winter season.
Sweep the debris off your patios and walkways.
Debris that gets stuck on the patio surfaces can leave stains on them. So to avoid the staining of patios as well as the formation of mould or algae make sure to sweep away all the debris using a brush before the winter season sets off.
Clean the stains
After clearing the debris, check for spots and stains on the patio surfaces. Using soapy water and a soft-bristled brush, you can get rid of most of the stains. For those stubborn stains, try considering pressure washing.
Protect your patio furniture
Never leave your patio furniture out throughout the winters. Store them inside in a safe place, so that you can relax and unwind on them when spring arrives.
Install an awning
Water can cause huge damage to the patio. Moisture can lead to the growth of moss and algae. This not only damages the patio but also makes it difficult to walk over them. By installing retractable awning you avoid the damage caused by water during rainy seasons.
Seal any cracks or openings
Check for gaps in the joints, using cement to fill them in. Backfill the edges of the patio to avoid water lodging. Patios made of natural stone need to be resealed after every few years. This will avoid any further damage caused by harsh weather conditions.
Check the gutters and downspouts
The gutters and downspouts must be led away from the top surfaces. It should be cleaned and sealed well.
